Classes

Schedule and info regarding classes Dave Hobbs offers. Working 50 plus hours per week full time with Delphi in the aftermarket training arena keeps me quite busy these days.  I continue teaching engine performance classes at Ivy Tech College in Kokomo Indiana and writing for Motor Magazine along with a handful of classes per year for non-profit and ‘mom & pop’ organizations.

Hybrid Training – Technology that’s shocking…figurative as well as literally.  Well over 1 million high voltage hybrids are on the road today. Adding to the ultra high technology of today’s conventional vehicles are components like inverters, converters, AC motor generators and high voltage battery packs.  Do you know how to handle these radically new vehicles with orange cables and decals with warnings of possible injury and death?  You can learn to work safely and diagnose properly this new breed of vehicle with the most profound evolution of technology since 1981.  Make sure you sign up soon for a hybrid technologies class and avoid future “technoshock” in your shop.

J2534 Classes – Reprogramming is not only required for replacement of many types of modules, it is rapidly becoming a method to cure problems ranging from false DTCs and drivability to HVAC performance.  Flashing isn’t a dealer only job anymore.  All sorts of powertrain, body and chassis modules are being reprogrammed by the independent aftermarket with J2534 devices in the hands of trained technicians.  Learn how to bring this profitable service work into your shop.

Databusing – The line from the classic movie Cool Hand Luke was “what we are dealing with is a failure to communicate.”  If you’ve experienced that with your scan tool not communicating or repeat U-Codes recently and are at a loss for knowing where to begin your diagnostic attack, you need a class on serial data bus diagnostics.  ”F.R.E.D. Takes The Bus” (Frustrating Ridiculous Electronic Device)  is a multi OEM up to date workshop on the whys and hows of vehicle electronic communications.  Learn practical ways to diagnose data bus problems and take the “Frustration” out of  your customers’ “F.R.E.D.s”

GM Updates – Displacement on Demand, Cam Phasing, Viscous Fan Clutches, Throttle By Wire, PCM Controlling Charging Systems….the list goes on as GM really proves “it isn’t your father’s Oldsmobile” or any other brand for that matter.  Make sure you are ready for the latest technology the “General” puts into your service bay.

EVAP Diagnostics – Evap codes are always in the top 10 most commonly encountered codes no matter what part of the country you are in and what car is in your bay.  Each OEM seems to have it’s own system and unique way of going about diagnostics often making for a long and frustrating diagnostic experience.  This class will show you how to simplify your evap problems with practical tips that show you how to understand evap DTCs and arrive at the right diagnosis using any scan tool and evap / smoke machine.

Electrical Essentials – Basics aren’t really basic if they tend to trip us up up over and over which is exactly what electrical problems can do.  In this practical workshop on real world electrical diagnostics you’ll learn to simplify the most confusing schematics and master one of the most valuable and often understood tools in your toolbox…your DVOM.
